Couldn’t think of anything more depressing than having to spend the rest of your life thinking ‘one day at a time’ and having to deal with all the ‘higher being’ bollocks.

Far more effective ways of giving it up.

I'd sooner just be alcoholic than join that weird cult.

Fuck all that. Live your life as you want to, not as others think you should.

If it gets to become a social issue, then guidance may be needed, but not all that bollocks.

Not sure the choice to stay alcoholic is there for someone to make.

It seems the choices are job v unemployed, marriage v no marriage, family v no family, home v homeless, alive v dead

Could be wrong

Explore the options and choose which one. Will give the greatest chance of beating it.

Best of luck

A close friend of mine has gone through alcohol rehab, a different program to AA based more cognitive /scientific than AA which relies on religion.

Said it has helped him.

Can't remember what it's called though.

Re: Your Experiences of Alchoholics Anonymous 12 Step Programme
Bosman - alcoholics anonymous has helped millions of people all over the world. It takes a monumental leap of arrogance, ignorance and downright stupidity to suggest it's a load of bollocks

That said, success rates are limited, believe about 1 in 10 - and the most important thing to understand is that different things work for different people. The very best and most expensive addiction centres have similar success rates.

Given that it's free, you (or whoever) loses nothing by trying it - but genuinely trying it, not just going to keep family off your case or because you think it will save your job for you (as with most things you get out what you put in) - and if it doesn't work for you then there are a multitude of other options to explore.

I would be wary of over diagnosis. These days everyone seems to need to have a 'thing' or an 'ism' of some kind. Not a criticism as such, just happens a lot nowadays.

Ultimately, whatever route you take , the messages are fundamentally the same - alcoholics/addicts are dishonest and don't take responsibility for their actions. If you have the ability to be honest and take responsibility then any path you take will give you a fighting chance. Never make the mistake of thinking its physical- the human body is incredibly resilient and is the last thing to go; you don't physically need a drink to survive until months or years after your brain has been telling you that you do. That's the bit you need to address, however you choose to do it.

I'd ignore people who carry on about it being a religion. You should try everything.

Re: Your Experiences of Alchoholics Anonymous 12 Step Programme
I found that the 12 steps part was pretty good, however the god bothering part of it was a little too much for me.

As Griff mentioned, too many people get over diagnosed and you personally feel you have a bigger problem than it actually is because people around you say "oh you drink too much" which creates that negative way of thinking in your mind that your a lot worse than what you really are.

The issue with any form of addiction, there isn't 1 cure for all. Everyone has different triggers and react differently to advice etc.

The one thing I personally found was that actually speaking to like minded people really, really helped me. This is going to sound bad but some of the stories I heard actually made me think I'm not half as bad as some of these people and to stop thinking so badly of myself.

I know someone who is in one of these programmes. It's saved his life probably, definitely saved his marriage and kept him his kids. The downside is that he's caught religion now, but I guess that ain't gonna kill you, it's just a bit cunty and dull. Works for him. So far anyway.
